Do I have to use the body shop my insurance suggests?
Short answer: no. California law gives you the right to choose where your car is repaired.
When you file a claim, your insurance adjuster will almost always recommend a shop from their Direct Repair Program (DRP) network. They will tell you it is faster, easier, and pre-approved. What they will not tell you is that you are never required to use it.
What California law actually says
California Insurance Code §758.5 makes it illegal for an insurer to require you to use a specific shop. They can suggest one, but the choice is yours. If an adjuster pressures you, that pressure itself is a violation you can report to the California Department of Insurance.
Why DRP shops can cost you in the long run
DRP shops have agreements with the insurer that often include using aftermarket or used parts, skipping certain procedures, and meeting tight cycle-time targets. That is great for the insurance company's bottom line. It is not always great for the long-term value, safety, or appearance of your vehicle.
What an independent shop does differently
At Focus On Cars we fight for OEM (original equipment manufacturer) parts whenever possible, follow factory repair procedures, and back our work with a lifetime warranty. We bill your insurance directly so the out-of-pocket experience is the same as a DRP shop - but the repair quality is on your side, not theirs.
How to exercise your right
When the adjuster asks where to send the car, simply say: 'I would like the vehicle repaired at Focus On Cars in Compton.' That is it. We will handle the rest, including the estimate, supplements, and final billing.
